Community Music Program

The Community Music Program provides a comprehensive program of musical training for the amateur performer, enlightened listener, and professional musician. Music education enhances creativity, discipline, communication and self-esteem for all ages.

 

Private Music Lessons

Private lessons... are available in Piano, Organ, Strings, Suzuki Violin, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Voice, Jazz Singing, Harp and Guitar. Students may register for up to 10 lessons throughout the summer session depending on teacher availability.

*Artist Faculty: Includes Division of Music College faculty and our most outstanding and experienced community teachers.

*WVU Division of Music faculty fees may be higher.

Senior Faculty: Members of the community or doctoral students selected on the basis of advanced professional training, experience and successful teaching record who have completed their Master of Arts degree in music (or equivalent professional experience).

Associate Faculty: These faculty are experienced teachers who have completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in music (or equivalent professional experience), in addition to a minimum of three years of successful teaching.

Student Faculty: Outstanding music students under faculty supervision.

A Summer Sampler:  A Young Child’s Intro to Music for Pre-school Children

In this fun filled class, explore the “first steps” in music education together with your child/children. Learn games and activities that include movement, singing and exploration of sounds you can do with your child/children to develop a strong musical foundation.  A wonderful way to explore and enjoy the world of music together!

Musicland Express (ages 4-6)

Cost: $50.00 

In this class, kids discover and play with music!  By posing music listening challenges, children respond to what they hear with their bodies in movement, their hands in playing musical instruments and their voices with singing.  Enjoyment of musical activities and games involves the whole child (and sometimes the parents or caregiver).  This is a great way to foster musical learning through musical "play."

This fun class will include training and performance technique for those children who love to sing.  If your child can’t wait to be in the spotlight, here is an ideal opportunity for fun-filled performances and that gratifying sound of applause.  Classes will include training for healthy, life-long singing, and performance opportunities for solos, duets and ensembles.  Special emphasis will be given to breathing and diction for singing.  Age-appropriate literature will include musical theatre selections, folk songs of various nations, art songs, and just plain fun songs!  Some movement will be added to many songs.

This class will serve as a fun and general introduction to classical music. Each session will focus on a specific area of Europe, learning about composers and their musical influences from that place and period. Games, hands-on projects and listening skills will make up each session. The final weeks of the class will focus on American music and composers. If you are looking for a class to spark your child’s interest in music, these summer classes are the place to be!  *Please choose appropriate session for age group.     

       

From Bach to Bartok: An Introduction to Standard Piano Literature

(ages 12-adult)

This class will introduce standard piano repertoire of significant composers from different periods (i.e. Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern).  A goal of this class is to instill a greater appreciation and knowledge of piano music and to experience the joy of music-making through guided listening and playing piano music.  Activities will include learning easy piano pieces, listening to recordings, learning about composers, watching videos of live recitals, and performing in a final informal recital (optional) which will give students a chance to play one favorite piece of their own choice.                                                                                         

 

Demystify the Dragon - Chinese Language and Music

Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays, 10:30am-12:00pm. Cost: $135.00 (includes materials)

Have you heard about the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in China?  Is Chinese the most difficult foreign language? Are we learning the same Chinese language spoken by Chinese people three thousand years ago?  How were the Chinese characters created?  This short-term course on Chinese language and music has two components.  The language component focuses on the teaching of Mandarin Chinese pronunciation, the pinyin system (Romanization), basic conversations, and reading, writing and typing Chinese characters.  Students will learn to perform various tasks in Chinese, ranging from meeting people, speaking about family, school life, shopping, talking about weather, one’s hobbies, etc.  A total of 150 to 200 characters will also be taught.  The Chinese music will be incorporated into the class through various hands-on activities such as Chinese folk songs and dances, Chinese calligraphy, and Chinese visual arts, etc.  This course is intensive, productive and fun! 

 

Harp on It!  Six-Week Introductory Harp Class

This class is open to all age groups with a limit of three students per class. Students will study hand position and simple tunes. Materials are included. Practice harp is available for an additional $40 fee. The rental fees entitle students to one hour per day, seven days per week practice time on the Community Arts Program’s Lyon & Healey Troubador Harp. No musical background is necessary.

 

Music Around the World (ages 15-adult)

Six weeks, June 11-July 16, Room 312A-Blaney Seminar Room

Wednesdays, 6:30-8:00pm. Cost: $80.00 

Explore the cultures and traditions of music around the world. This class will introduce students to world music via discussion, listening, and multimedia.  Possible topics of discussion may include West African, Native American, Appalachian Folk, Eastern European Music and Music of the Indian subcontinent.  An informative and fun way to learn about the world around us and how other cultures express themselves through music!

 

Introduction to Recording Technology (ages 15 and up)

Four sessions, June 2-11, Mondays & Wednesdays, 1:00-3:00pm

Rm. 200E. Cost: $75.00 

This class will teach the basic technology of recording and producing audio for broadcast and/or media release.  Students will also learn the basics of acoustic sound and technology, recording methods, listening to and analysis of a variety of styles, and some hands-on production work.  Course may vary based on size of class, and the background/experience of students enrolled.

 

Basic Sound Design for Video (ages 15 and up)

Four sessions, June 16-25, Mondays & Wednesdays, 1:00-3:00pm

Rm. 200E.Cost: $75.00 

This class will cover basic synchronization and insertion of sound effects and dialog to video selected by the students from an available library.  Students will be encouraged to think about how musical and everyday non-musical items from in and around their homes can be used to create unique and interesting sounds.  Sampling sessions and “sound safaris” will be conducted in and immediately around the Creative Arts Center depending on project needs.  Students will also have access to some of the instructor's personal sample libraries for use in the course.  Recording equipment will vary based on application, but the majority will be done using Digidesign Pro Tools HD and Bias Peak Pro software.  Course may vary based on size of class, and the background/experience of students enrolled.  

Prerequisite:  Students must have taken the Intro to Recording Technology course or have prior DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) experience and the instructor's permission.

 

Croon a Tune (high school through adult)

Five weeks, July 1-29, Rm. 424A  

Tuesdays, 6:00-8:00pm. Cost: $100.00  

Have you always wanted to sing in the style of Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, or even Fred Astaire?  This class will explore the techniques involved in song stylizing.  Songs from musical theatre and popular music of the 30’s through the 60’s will be the focus.  Classes will consist of part lecture, demonstration and student participation.  Each student will prepare three songs for a performance at the end of the class sessions.  Related areas of voice production, presentation, stage movement and suitable repertoire for various occasions will be explored. 

 

Steel Band Ensemble (ages 9-adult)

Eight weeks, June 10-August 5 (No class July 8), Room 200B
Tuesdays, 3:00-4:30pm. Cost: $105.00

This unique ensemble will focus on the musical styles of the Caribbean and learning how to play the steel drums. Students will receive instruction in general music, reading, theory, rhythm and improvisation. Some prior music reading skills are required; however, a background in percussion is not. Recommended for families and those with limited musical ability who have an interest in playing the steel drums. Enrollment limited to 15.

 

Adult Vocal Ensemble (18 and older)

*Two times to choose from: 4:00-4:55pm or 5:00-5:55pm.  

In a group setting, share the fun of singing pop and show tunes that have become standards through the years.  Songs like “As Time Goes By,”  “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and “Somewhere” from West Side Story.  We’ll also enjoy fun songs like “Splish Splash I Was Taking a Bath” and “Hard Hearted Hannah the Vamp of Savannah.” *Please be sure to specify session and time                          

        

         

Yoga 4 Creativity

Tuesdays, 5:30-6:45pm. Cost: $70.00 

Yoga is great for strengthening your body, stimulating your mind and adding fuel to your creative pursuits, whether it be in the visual, performing, or everyday arts. This moderately paced, flow-style class will explore yoga techniques, such as posture sequencing, breath awareness, and mindful meditation, to encourage the awakening of creative energy.
